As Perlite and Diatomite have excellent insulating properties, a substantial amount is used in refractory castables, bricks and blocks. In higher temperature applications Perlite refractories are often used as back up insulating layers for higher duty refractories.
Perlite cleanses the metal by coagulating impurities; ladle-lining life is increased by virtue of a vitreous residual coating left on the refractory. Perlite does not produce smoke or noxious fumes in this application method.
Perlite is often part of mix which is used in hot tops and risers; this prevents shrinkage cavities in ingots and castings.
